Turbot - the family Bothidae, fish from a family
of the family Pleuronectidae, living at the bottom of seas in the
tropical and moderate zone. Shape close to a circle, eyes with most
kinds located on the left side of the body, large, deep mouth opening,
long dorsal fin beginning over the eye. Naked body or with some
kinds covered with scales. Some Bothidae are as large as 150 cm.
Many kinds are valuable consumption fish.
The European representatives of the Bothidae are e.g.: turbot (Psetta
maxima), with large economic significance, reaching 100 m in length,
within 13 seconds able to change precisely colouration and designs
on the skin, becoming similar to the background; Arnoglossus up
to 25 cm long, and flatfish. The other valuable types are e.g. Hamilton
(Pseudorhombus arsius), living in the southern part of the Pacific
and in the Indian Ocean, Indian Halibut (Psettodes erumei), living
in the shelf of the Indian Ocean and in the Red Sea as well as Paralichthys
(Paralichthys tropicus), reaching up to 60 cm of length.
